Physical Education

Physical Education (P.E.)

“Intelligence and skill can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong.”  John F. Kennedy

Introduction

At Redby, Physical Education is taught in a way that develops the child's knowledge, skills and understanding. It involves the child in the continuous process of decision making, selecting and applying skills, performing, evaluating and refining their work. It contributes to the overall education of the child by encouraging and helping them to lead full and valuable lives through engaging in purposeful physical activity. The child will perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities. Physical education is divided into six areas of activity based on identified core values: physical, cognitive, creative, social and personal using the REAL PE resources, website and assessment the child will be encouraged to develop the personal qualities of enthusiasm, commitment, fairness and a positive attitude towards a healthy lifestyle. Healthy lifestyles are encouraged at Redby, with children being encouraged to a mile daily on our playground tracks.

Redby has a Young Leaders Programme, which promotes active lifestyles during the lunch hour to our younger children and developed the leadership skills of our older KS2 children. Each lunchtime involves a team of young leaders on the playground to lead games and support our younger children.

At Redby, each year group will attend a cluster competition with other local schools in the following sports; Athletics, Gymnastics, Tennis, Cricket and Tag Rugby. Specialist level 2 and 3 coaches from local clubs (Boldon Lawn Tennis, NERMLS Rugby  and Durham Cricket Club) are employed in the run up to the competitions, so that the children get the best possible support and skills necessary to succeed. Swimming is a life skill and at Redby is taught in year 5 at the Sunderland Aquatic Centre by certified swimming coaches throughout the Autumn and Spring terms. Redby is an award winner when it comes to physical education and have won the Great Active Sunderland Schools Charter Gold Award in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022. They have also won the Gold Schools Games Mark on five separate occasions between 2016 - 2021. Redby acquired a virtual award for it PE website and virtual competitions it competed in during lockdown.

Intent

PE taught at Redby is a curriculum that is ambitious and designed to give all pupils the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life as healthy, sporting individuals. Implementation

Teachers create an environment that allows pupils to focus on learning. The teaching materials teachers select, reflect the school’s ambitious intentions for the course of study and clearly support the intent of a coherently planned curriculum, sequenced towards cumulatively sufficient knowledge and skills for future learning and employment. This is through the use of the “Jasmine” learning platform (website) and resources.

Impact

Pupils develop detailed knowledge and skills across the curriculum and, as a result, achieve well. This is shown through termly assessments by teachers and a whole school impact report and assessment wheels for skills.

EYFS

In EYFS, children are taught PE through the REAL PE Foundation curriculum and the different themes it offers. The six strands of REAL PE (cognitive, social, personal, physical, health and fitness and creative) will be learned through the themes of: The Birthday Bike Surprise Pirate Pranks, Journey to the Blue Planet, Monkey Business, Tilly the Train's Big Day, Thembi Walks the Tightrope, Clowning Around, Wendy's Water-ski Challenge, John and Jasmine Learn to Juggle, Ringo to the Rescue, Sammy Squirrel and his Rolling Nuts and Caspar the Very Clever Cat. These themes will engage the children and develop their skills through games, song and imaginative activities.

The Children in EYFS are also taught how to become more independent and how to respect one another. They will be encouraged to:

  • Work on simple tasks independently
  • Taking turns and sharing
  • Understand and follow simple rules
  • Explore and describe different movements
  • Perform a range of skills and link movements together
  • Be aware of why exercise is important for good health

SEND

We aim to create a learning environment that is inclusive and accessible for all pupils. Lessons will be taught in a way that is educational, sensitive yet enjoyable and teachers will remain inclusive and meet the needs all children. This is achieved by creating a space that feels safe and will encourage all children to explore their emotions and ask questions through carefully and appropriately planned lessons.
